West Cornwall is not large, but it is long and thin, and twenty miles here takes longer than twenty miles anywhere else. If you are looking for an escape room, the practical question is which one you can actually reach.
Penzance
We are at 44 New Street, in the basement of the Old Telephone Exchange, right in the centre of town. Four rooms, five to ten minutes’ walk from the railway and bus stations.
Penzance is the natural base for the far west: Land’s End, the Minack, Mousehole, Marazion and St Michael’s Mount are all within half an hour, and the station is the end of the line so arriving without a car is straightforward.
How far is it from where you are staying?
- Penzance — you are already here
- Newlyn — a mile round the bay
- Mousehole — about three miles
- Marazion — about three miles east, under St Michael’s Mount
- St Just — about seven miles out towards Land’s End
- Hayle — about eight miles north
- Helston — about thirteen miles east, for the Lizard
- Truro — twenty-six miles up the A30
What to look for wherever you go
- Private games. Ours always are — you are never put in with strangers to make up numbers.
- Per-room pricing. Charging for the room rather than per head means a bigger group pays less each.
- Honest answers about scares. Ask before booking if anyone is uneasy. The Lamorna Brown Affair has none at all.
- Access. Ask about stairs and mobility. Ours are in a basement down a flight of stairs, with one puzzle that asks you to bend low.
- Opening hours. We run 10am to 10pm, seven days, which is later than most.
Our four rooms
28 Pasties Later runs a full 90 minutes with a playful zombie streak. Death By Prescription is a poisoning case. The Lamorna Brown Affair is a Cornish art mystery with no scares whatsoever. The Holiday Heist runs November to February.
2 to 8 players per room, up to 23 across the rooms at once, from £60 per room (about £20pp when full), under-7s free, well-behaved dogs welcome.
Worth the drive?
From most of West Cornwall, yes — because Penzance gives you somewhere to go afterwards. The seafront, Chapel Street and the town’s food are all a couple of minutes from our door, which is not true of an escape room on a retail park.
