Cornwall on a clear day needs no help from anyone. Cornwall in horizontal drizzle, with a car full of people who had planned a beach, is a different problem. This is a practical list of what actually works when the forecast turns.
The honest bit first
West Cornwall gets roughly 130 days of rain a year. If you are here for a week, one or two wet days is the realistic expectation, not bad luck. The visitors who enjoy Cornwall most are the ones who arrive with a wet-weather plan already in their back pocket.
Indoor things to do in West Cornwall
An escape room
We are going to declare our interest immediately: we run Escape Rooms Cornwall on New Street in Penzance. But rain is genuinely why a lot of people find us. An escape room is completely weatherproof, it takes a group of up to eight in one room, and it gives everyone something to do that is not looking at a phone. Games run 10am to 10pm, seven days a week, so a wet morning or a wet evening both work.
It also solves the mixed-group problem. Teenagers, grandparents and eight-year-olds all contribute to the same puzzles, which is not true of most rainy-day options.
Galleries and museums
Newlyn Art Gallery is a mile round the bay from Penzance. For the Penzance end of things, including Penlee House Gallery and Museum and Chapel Street, see our guide to indoor activities in Penzance.
The Minack, sort of
The Minack Theatre’s visitor centre and exhibition stay open in poor weather even when performances are affected. The cliffs in rain are genuinely dramatic, if you are dressed for it.
Further afield
If you are happy to drive, Geevor Tin Mine near Pendeen runs underground tours, and the Eden Project’s covered biomes near St Austell were built for a day like this. Check opening times before you set off.
Eat slowly
Not a joke. Penzance and Newlyn have enough good food that a long lunch is a legitimate plan rather than a fallback, and the harbour looks better in bad weather than most places look in sunshine.
Building a wet day that actually works
The mistake is trying to fill the whole day with one activity. A wet day runs better in blocks: something active in the morning, a long lunch, something indoors in the afternoon. Penzance suits this because everything is within a few minutes’ walk of everything else.
A common pattern for groups staying nearby is an escape room slot late morning, lunch in town, then a gallery or the pool. You are never outside for more than a few minutes at a stretch.
What to know if you come to us
- Rooms take 2 to 8 players, up to 23 across the rooms at once
- From £60 per room, priced per room rather than per head — bigger groups pay less each, about £20 a head when full
- Under-7s play free
- Well-behaved dogs are welcome in every room, which matters when the weather has cancelled the walk
- We are at 44 New Street, Penzance TR18 2LZ, in the basement of the Old Telephone Exchange
- Open 10am to 10pm, seven days a week
The rooms are down a flight of stairs and one puzzle asks you to bend low — ring 01736 691049 if you would like to talk that through first.
Book something for the wet day before it arrives
Wet-weather options in Cornwall fill fastest, because everyone books them at nine in the morning when they look out of the window. If rain is forecast for the middle of your week, book ahead rather than hoping.
Check availability or see prices. Not sure the group will suit it? Who can play answers most of it.
