Penzance is the last proper town before Land’s End, and it is a great deal more interesting than being simply the end of the line. We run an escape room on New Street, so we spend a lot of time telling visitors what else to do with their afternoon. This is that answer, written down.
Start at the seafront
The promenade runs from the harbour towards Newlyn with Mount’s Bay open in front of it and St Michael’s Mount sitting out to the east. It is the single best free thing in town and it takes twenty minutes.
The Jubilee Pool sits at the near end — a 1930s art deco seawater lido, part of it geothermally heated, which means it works in weather that would close anywhere else.
Penlee House
The town’s gallery and museum, strong on the Newlyn School painters who worked around this coast in the late nineteenth century. It is small, well done, and it explains a lot about why so many artists ended up in this corner of Cornwall.
Chapel Street
The oldest and strangest street in town, running up from the harbour. The Egyptian House is exactly what it sounds like and is worth the walk on its own. Good independent shops, and it connects the seafront to the top of town without going near a main road.
The harbour and Newlyn
Penzance harbour is working rather than ornamental, and a mile round the bay Newlyn is one of the largest fishing ports in the country. Go early and it is genuinely busy. The walk between the two along the front is flat and easy.
Getting out of town
Penzance works well as a base because everything in West Cornwall is close. St Michael’s Mount is a few minutes east at Marazion. Mousehole is a couple of miles the other way. The Minack and Porthcurno are about twenty minutes west, Lamorna Cove is closer still, and Land’s End is beyond that. You can reach any of them and be back for dinner.
When the weather turns
It will, at some point. Penzance handles rain better than most Cornish towns because the good things are close together and mostly indoors: the gallery, the pool, the shops on Chapel Street, and a long lunch.
This is also where we come in. Escape Rooms Cornwall is on New Street, in the basement of the Old Telephone Exchange, five to ten minutes’ walk up from the station. An hour in a locked room is entirely weatherproof and works for a mixed group in a way that few other options do.

Practical notes
Penzance station is the end of the line and the bus station is beside it, so arriving without a car is genuinely easy. If you drive, the harbour car parks on Wharfside are the nearest large option — street parking around New Street is limited and time-restricted.
